Entertainment Avenue: Superman (Review) Hope, Strength & A Great Comeback
Entertainment Avenue: Superman, He's Back, Bright & Bold.
Superman has been widely known as an action packed hero who often wasn't brooding or on the cheerful side of life, more of a very nonchalant figure who saves the day and flees the scene. While there have been variations of the character to stretch the story and explore creative writing and reimagining, it all goes back to the original that set the overall tone of heroic identity.
We've had Superman movies throughout the years featuring prominent actors that brought their own touch to the man of tomorrow. It's always fun when you have an actor that made this comicbook character extra special for you from Kirk Alyn to Christopher Reeve and to Henry Cavill then to David Corenswet who at first received a mixed reception only for fans to give him a nod of approval.
The franchise got a reboot and don't we all hate those? James Gunn stepped in and gave Superman brighter colour and the family touch, he doesn't feel like he's strictly a hero for men who makes beating up bad guys look cool, no James takes away the highly graphic and brutal beatdowns to give Superman room to be a hero with a strong character, range as well. This Superman seems so human and strays away from the overly invincible as citizens of metropolis see him take nasty devastating blows while rooting for him to get back up. He hurts too just like everyone else.
Clark Kent isn't the superhero who grows up hating the world, he is an alien who gets adopted by Martha and Jonathan Kent, giving him the best upbringing that kickstarts a passion within him to be a man of hope, one who saves the day with purpose not just a beatdown that holds no value.
Starring David Corenswet. Rachel Bronsnahan. Nicholas Hoult. Ed Gathegi. Isabela Merced. Nathan Fillion. Wendell Pierce. This movie is inviting of course and features some exciting DC characters like Green Lantern. Hawkgirl. Mr. Terrific and Metamorpho who truly shine. The daily planet team as well is given a tiny bit of room to not just be a throwaway scene but there's relevance, detail which add an extra layer to the story. Lex Luthor on the other hand proves to be an arrogant rich somebody that is playing mind games and up to no good; paints the hero as the villain for an even grander scheme. His performance has me quite infuriated, I absolutely am scared for Superman and also hoping Luthor gets it handed to him.
Lois on the other hand is strikingly gorgeous, she has this retro scheek style that I adore. Her relationship tension with Superman isn't given room to breathe, she's such an important character that I feel like she played a very small role, what hurts the film is that it has so much going on there's never time to actually flesh out and further progress the stakes, it's like a blink and you'll miss it, it runs for 2 hours yet a lot is still left to be desired a lot of the scenes felt like draw-in previews that are compelling and they leave you wanting more, giving you a dissatisfaction yet the movie is solid it has a lot of highs.
The performances are marvelous to watch (hehehe 😂) they bring in their A-game, the cinematography is proper epic, so many beautiful visual moments that made the movie stand out. I really wanted Superman and Lex to have more intense scenes together than what we got. But it definitely was a Brain vs Braun so very well done, I can't complain.
Mr. Terrific nearly stole the show, I was left intrigued by his character. Kudos to everyone involved in bringing this character on board. While many complained about the suits, I'd say they were decent. Superman looked like an action figure come to life. He didn't seem too mature, aka for adults only which makes it even better.
Overall we have a really good family friendly, action packed movie that feels like it needed more time to truly tell its story while balancing everything that was happening because so many things happened.
We give it a 7.8/10. And I was unimpressed with what happened to Superman & Lois (TV series) so I can safely say we're in good hands. A sequel is in the works set for 2027 release under the title Man Of Tomorrow.
