The world of TV reflects real life, in certain seasons of our lives people can go from regular to recurring then to guest appearances. It's all in the setting of the story, the relevance and role they have to play. It's understandable unless you're a huge fan of the character, as most have started petitions/campaigns for their fave cancelled shows to be brought back like Brooklyn Nine-9 & Lucifer or a back from the dead? Agent Phil Coulson on Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D, Bobby Ewing on Dallas.
Ben Gavin was a regular on the acclaimed first season of historic CBS Soap Opera Beyond The Gates by Michele Val Jean. Set in Fairmont Crest focusing on an affluent black family decorated in Medical. Political. Entertainment spaces with some locked up scandals that could potentially ruin more than just a reputation.
They definitely are respected, envied and are the main attraction yet their world also has some amazing acts that flesh out the story offering irresistible drama that keeps you glued.
Derek is a firefighter and Ashley's longtime boyfriend before Andre Richardson's (Sean Freeman) directorial debut into their lives giving them a picture of seperation as Ashley (Jen Jacob) started seeing life as a photographer, "picturing Paris" and no more settling for less, she wanted crepes instead eggs on toast. What was supposed to be wedding photos turned into a caption of conflict. The two were in their own bubble (when) not hanging around Jacob (Jibre Hordges) and Naomi (Arielle Prepetit). They had fans divided and at times wished for their breakup due to how their relationship often felt uneven. They felt like they were holding each other back or safety nets for don't be daring, just keep it simple.
Ben Gavin is a really good actor and he's got the looks to be a resident bad boy. At times we wish he was rich or close to Joey Armstrong (Jon Lindstrom). He has the potential to be a compelling villainous character. The usual son of powerful business man who definitely makes everyone feel his dominance, the aroma of arrogance as if this meal is only meant for the wealthy. Derek has gained adoration from fans who were devastated by news that he's off contract for Season 2 and some are pointing out it's not that he was the problem, it's the writing and positioning.
Derek had great chemistry with Shanice (Ernestine Johnson) instead she's now paired with Ted (Keith D Robinson) so now we're all wondering about the fate of Derek! We still want him on the show and definitely don't want him written off. The character has potential so we definitely are rooting for him to stick around and have some fun storylines with Jacob, his co-workers or something completely new that develops him away from Ashley. Because they are totally dunzo.
Derek is multifaceted from what we've seen, the tones of humanity and the flaws of selfishness and impulsive behaviour were beautifully portrayed. The Love made me do it Schtick, he got desperate became a liar and insecurities pushed him to lose the girl of his dreams and now has to wake up to a harsh reality of "if only I didn't". His confrontation with Leslie (Trisha Mann-Grant) was also interesting we thought we'd see more of that but it was a one off. Get him into the world of politics, Derek can antagonize a crowd or witness something to hold people like Martin (Brandon Claybon) accountable, a storyline that involves those outside the gates who can't even access the country club. We can only imagine!
