Album Appreciation: Dumblonde's Unforgettable Self Titled Debut is a Wildlands Winner!

Album Appreciation: Dumblonde's Self Titled - 2015's Golden Independent Release

Official Artwork./ Double Platinum Inc

After the sad second split of universally adored Billboard charting girl group Danity Kane which was formed on making the band, we thought all hope of music was lost but Shannon Bex & Aubrey O'Day banded together for something found in a new territory taking inspiration and influence from the Ting Tings, Roxette and etc they stepped into fresh clicking high heels, brought back a groove with their own take.

The self titled stays consistent and yet radiates a transformative sonic experience, White Lightning which is electric, stomping beats, alluring harmonies and some swagger packed verses with an enchanting Pre-Chorus it definitely gives a more dark pop energy with some vibrance, it's a highlight and definitely kicks off a new direction.

Dreamsicle is definitely a gorgeous busy production, very bright and boasts of motivational fun, daring and double the trouble! It's more of a power pact about achieving your goals over a shimmering, crashing and trance arrangement. It brings the disco to the dancefloor with a nice drop beat. The only record with ad-libs. It almost sounds like two women who've been overworked, underpaid and were at a disadvantage but pursue forward and they're never done. There's no stopping them.

Tender Green Life is more fun, experimental, trippy and elegant. Aubrey sounding like a hippy on the verses, the beat is like graffiti come to sound, it has this distinct element to it that gives you almost a meditation kind of feel, soothing and yet hit and happening. It's one of their best songs, shout out to R8dio for this one it's definitely outstanding. Almost similar style to Girls Aloud who have an inventive take on music.

Waiting On You!

We're now in retro romance, Aubrey & Shannon give us something for the heart, it's like a lover's celebration, the beat carries a strong sense of nostalgia it feels like the 80s again and it's exciting. You're sure to feel goosebumps or euphoria listening to this one. It breaks the song structure formula and goes a different route, repetitive? Yes! Dull! Who? Exactly it is a good dose and more.

Carry On

The song is about Danity Kane but I must say it definitely has this ready for war, middle ages brand on it, it sounds like a concert on a battlefield, it's almost like indie pop/folk and would definitely be brilliant for a movie trailer. It has the star quality to be the score that steals the show. Also not shying away from breaking away from giving too much chorus, it quickly offers a proper send off with Aubrey & Shannon mourning and saying goodbye as they sing "fall away love, fall away love, fall down down fall...".

Love Blind

This one has a romantic rush of emotions, think of a video game, an arcade type of vibe, it's almost futuristic and is sure to make you dance. As if they're going to blast off to a club in space yet they find themselves raving in the middle of the night. A Blush Pop.

You Got Me is is So On play, club ready and mixing magic on display. A confidence booster, feel good track that gives you a refreshing night out to let your hair down.

Overall Dumblonde's debut gives us the unexpected in Pop, it definitely defies the branching in as they sprout in the Wildlands and it's not a battle for survival but showing that it's not about big machine factories to craft an industry approved record. They are able to give a untameable tunes.

Takeaway is one of the standout records, it definitely sneaks out of 80s as a Roxette kind of hit. Dumblonde give us an emotional unpacking with this one. It's different and risky.

We give it an 8.9/10
