Actress Of The Week: Assa Kanoute as Abby - Good Writing & An Applaud Worthy Performance!

Portraying Abby on BBC's hit drama now partnered with Tubi for Season 2, this girl is definitely fun to watch, she doesn't hold back and is able to give the character a broad portrayal as with each episode Abby stepped out of her shell of just being the popular girl part of a trio. The layering was well done as it was not about how pretty she is and receiving superficial storylines that are overly done on TV but she showcases variations of Abby that don't give identity crisis as to who really is Abby but it's more of she's the let loose party girl, irrational, afraid of accountability, stubborn, headstrong and supportive also bratty but means well. 

She works well with the material she is given and you can't help but enjoy Abbiola even when she is being ridiculous like the scene in Episode 3 of Season 2 in the cafeteria when she tries to make Toby jealous and it backfires, she gives an A+ performance that even Caroline may have to reconsider. We see a teenager that navigates her way as a student at Saint Gilbert High and a more sentimental side comes out through her friendship with Leah (Jodie Campbell) and her boyfriend Toby (Sekou Diaby)

Their relationship has all the electricity to light up a city yet we appreciate how they're written to be messy, of course it's young love it isn't going to be the ABCs more mathematics 1+1 and what makes two or removes or adds tension, divides, multiplies conflict we see it. We don't get a typical mean girl yet we see a change in portrayal and Assa Kanouté doesn't shy away from showing off her acting chops. Fun, spicy and one to sure make you laugh and want a bestie. 

Hopefully in Season 3 she sticks around. Kudos to Daniel Lawrence Taylor for writing such a really good character. Catch Assa Kanouté on Boarders currently streaming Season 1 & 2 on Tubi. BBC iPlayer.
