Etv's hit primetime telenovela Imbewu has had an amazing run with impeccable onscreen performances, brilliant storylines (some had us raise eyebrows but oh well), stunning cinematography and a stand out set (they were different from other shows alright) which was pleasant to see.
It premiered on etv in 2018 from a warm to acclaimed reception while it has had controversial moments such as recasting lead roles it didn't miss a step. Produced by Grapevine Productions (a co-production between Word of Mouth Productions, Videovision Entertainment and Luyks Productions)
& Duma Ndlovu, Anant Singh& Leleti Khumalo came together to unite two tribes, a show where black and Indian people were the focus.
Written by: Ben Johnson Jr. Marina Bekker.
While most of the time the Bhengus had more screentime the Rampersard family's arc was always enjoyable and interesting to watch. We hoped for the opening sequence and soundtrack to feature both Zulu & Indian elements which in its final season showcased that on the opening credits.
Starring: Leleti Khumalo. Raphael Griffiths. Nokubonga Khuzwayo. Jack Devnarai. Kajal Maharaj. Kay Sibiya. Thembi Mtshali Jones. Nqobile Siphamla. Sandile Dlamini. Tony Kgoroge. Jailoshini Naidoo. Zahir Bassa.
Aired: weeknights on etv @21:00
With an omnibus every Saturday.
Imbewu was officially cancelled after 5 Seasons of beautiful story telling. Fans of the show weren't really happy with the news while some felt it was time for the curtain call.
Our favorite moments are:
5. Mazulu & The Bhengu Family Vs Thokozile - Leleti Khumalo & Nqobile Siphamla brought their A game during this intense feud. It was popcorn gold. They owned their respective roles and thrived in the drama of the moment. It was too good you couldn't miss out on it. Thokozile proved to be a worthy foe who kept Mazulu and the Bhengus on their toes. Two strong women fighting for a man's heart. Imagine what they could be capable of if they joined forces.
4. Shria Vs Zakithi (Frenemies) - Their feud kicked off in Season 1 and as the show progressed they had a frenemies relationship with each as they'd show up for each other or be ready to sink the other. It was nice to see their dynamic. Wish they did more with them especially in the office. A cat fight here and there, especially at Events.
3. The Secret Coming Out about Mazulu & Phakade's affair : This was EPIC. It showcased how two families were united and then broken from the inside by schemes, secrets and cultural methods that seemed like a good idea but were only the launch of a disaster of resentment served with a side of revenge.
2. Yuveer & Maharaj's Broken Relationship - Their father and son relationship was far from decent. It was toxic and dangerous as Yuveer often found himself having to prove his worthiness to his hard to please father. They needed more screentime during their introduction especially with Yuveer's sexual orientation. They didn't dive deep into it but both actors delivered and the writing was excellent as it highlighted the necessary points to carry the story forward.
1. Maharaj aka Mr. I'm Done Yet, So I'm Back - He's one villain we never saw coming. He's cunning and cruel, can't deny the witty charm plus faux modesty he displays. If his hands are dirty then it wasn't gardening, he means business. Everytime he appears onscreen you can't help but give him your undivided attention. Jack definitely showed us the range he has. From portraying sweet and sincere Rajesh Kumar on Isidingo to an outstanding villain who you just can't help but love even though he's so bad.
There are many other impactful storylines and moments that we enjoyed such as Nkululeko & Zithulele's feud. The Aftermath of Zimele's death, Mazulu having to go against her family. Menzi coming into the mix of things..Shria & Zimele's feud was also something special on TV. Nkululeko's arrival, he was a fan favorite until he got arrogant and power driven (massive transformation right there)
but these are our Top 5.
