Album Appreciation: Blackheart by Dawn Richard
Album Appreciation: Blackheart by Dawn Richard
Dawn Richard is one of the most amazing independent artists out there, always breaking boundaries, first introduced on Making The Band and as part of thee most loved girl group Danity Kane which made history with their debut and sophomore releases. An industry creative who touches music to sooth and bring back an energy we thought we lost tone to. All her projects stand out and offer something refreshing. One of our favorite projects is the Heart trilogy. This week we appreciate Blackheart (I listened to this album while I was in High School (17) & now at age 24, I'm like This is Gold) which is more of the dark chapter which showcases Power. Abandonment, Homecoming , Rising (Phoenix), Loss & other strong subjects beautifully written and expressed brilliantly through vocals.
Songs like Billie Jean open with harmonies that highlight an announcement, like a trumpet being blown and you listen to the coming message, seductive and empowering it sure is. The Deep sounds so sad yet it carries strength and awareness, Dawn noting depth.
Choices is a personal favorite song which is about self love and she's choosing herself, singing with confident and sounding so assured.
Castles is about Danity Kane, as they reunited in 2013 only to break up the following year, a sad time for the Dedikated Krew (DK fans). The song gives insight that sandcastles fall apart once water waves Hello. The album is a record of brilliance from start to finish. It's timeless, you can't put it at a certain timeline and expect it to dwell there. Songs like Titans, Projection, Adderall/Sold express social issues "We were speeding from the high, her fingertips numb to the night, we living like we're (dying too soon)" relevant and relatable giving you a view of life that flashes within seconds and becomes a past. Swimfree is more upbeat and gives you the opportunity to dance and have good hopes, a sweet departure while Warriors is a euphoric and charged up song that'll have you feeling good. Electronic and with sonic plot twists of instrumentation that work well together and don't overpower each other. Truly Gorgeous.
