We had a chat with him and here's what went down.
McKing: Firstly Welcome to Mzansi Avenue.
How are you?
Who is Terrence Ignatius Ngwila and how would you best describe him?
Terrence: Hi. I’m good thanks. And thank you for the invite.
Well Terrence Ngwila is a sometimes reserved, humble guy, who loves almost every form of art be it performance of Visual arts, an Actor, Writer, Director and Filmmaker from a small town called Allemansdrift c in Mpumalanga.
McKing: When did your love for acting kick off? What exactly triggered it?
Terrence: My love for acting started a little over 7 years ago when I did a play By Extraordinary Director Tshepo Ratona called - The Infidel, where I got a chance to work and learn from industry legend Sello Ramolahloane. Who simply made every opportunity on stage the best experience for me.
McKing: What's the process like? Whenever you have to step into a character's shoes?
Terrence: Stepping into character for me works differently on different days depending on the mood and energy I’m surrounded by. I usually use the Rubik’s cube to zone out of all the outside distractions in order for me to get a clear mind to work. But I find character in everyday people, by studying peoples behaviours, how they speak, walk, breath and speech patterns to name a few.
McKing: Wow that's interesting insight. Which character you've portrayed has been your favorite so far and why? You can only pick one.
Terrence: That’s a difficult one, but my favourite character so far will have to be Van Rooi from Bopha, a theatre production by legendary Playwright Percy Mtwa because it was such an intricate and challenging character for me to play. Trying to find the balance between the character's internal conflict and lopsided view of life.
McKing: A relatable but interesting character indeed. What Life lessons have you drawn/grasped from each character?
Terrence: Always find something new to learn, be consistent and humble every chance you get. Because humility is not a weakness. And I guess it’s because most of the characters I’ve played have been flawed.
Mcking: We always feel for Mohau, like why can't she just love him back, you know? Even though it was a longtime ago, onscreen content is timeless, what was it like working with Manaka Ranaka on Generations:The Legacy? Because your characters were onscreen magic.
Terrence: Working with Manaka Ranaka was an absolute honour, I’ve learned so much from her and grown so much as an artist. She was always willing to go the extra mile to make work easier for me and she’s one of the most kind people I’ve worked with, always fun to be around and always finds the humour is everything. She is a really genuine person and we’ve grown to being really good friends since then. And I guess that’s where the magic came from, being free around each other and feeding off of each other’s energies.
McKing: You definitely had a blast on set. You're always emphasizing humility on your posts, why is that? What's the connection?
Terrence: Humility is not a weakness. Because the world needs so much of it, and how hard can it be to chose to be humble.
McKing: True. What's your dream role?
Terrence: Definitely playing a South African Superhero character.
McKing: You're also a musician, can you tell us more about that?
Terrence: I’ve been a producer for over 15 years, since the first time I fixed up an old wracked piano and discovered FL Studio… I’ve worked with a few people, sang in school choirs, wrote, produced and co-produced songs for people. I’ve actually been a musician longer than I’ve been an actor.
McKing: Wow, what can you not do honestly? Your role as Mohau on Muvhango is one that's adored by fans, who want you to be a series regular, will we ever see more of Mohau on the show?
Terrence: I hope so, (chuckles) for now you’ll just have to stay tuned and keep buzzing on the socials, maybe I might pop by for a little longer next time and maybe get married for real this time.
McKing: We hope Rendani finally stops playing hard to get. Who are your influences related to the work that you do?
Terrence: Denzel Washington, Tom Parkerardy, Chadwick Boseman, Heath Ledger & Will Smith.
McKing: Which international actor would you love to work with?
Terrence: Denzel Washington
McKing: 5 things you can't go a day without?
Terrence:
- Rubik’s Cube
- Singing
- ice cream
- coffee
- watching a movie or series
McKing; Stage or Tv? Which one do you prefer?
Soapies or Sitcoms?
Terrence: Stage & Soapies.
McKing: In a world where sometimes roles are casted to people depending on the number of followers, do you think it sometimes messes with the quality of portrayal and the art itself? If talent isn't the focus?
Terrence: Absolutely, I think every artist should have some sort of training and experience before, regardless of their social media presence
McKing: What are we yet to see from you?
Terrence: Currently working on two projects still under wraps, but keep a look out on my social media to know more about them. Greater things yet to come.
McKing: Rooting for you. If you were a tv series which one would you be and why?
Terrence: Game Of Thrones, because I think it’s an extraordinary production. Except for that last season. I’m still not over that.
McKing: What would you change about the industry we're in?
Terrence: Protect Artists rights. Create more longer lasting opportunities for local talent and expose it to the world.
McKing: What has the reception been like from industry peers?
Terrence: The reception has been great.
Terrence Ignatius Ngwila is a force and we are rooting for him all the way. To more onscreen performances, amazing music and accolades. It was a blast having to interview him. Thank you for joining us.
